It is with profound sadness the Franzia family and Bronco Wine Company announce the passing of proud father, CEO, founding partner, and wine industry icon, Fred T. Franzia.
Fred passed Tuesday, September 13th at his Redwood home in Denair, California, with family by his side. He was 79 years old.
In 1973, Fred founded Bronco Wine Company with his brother Joseph S. and Cousin John with the vision of creating high quality wines at a value for wine consumers. Core to his vision was a belief that wine should be enjoyed and consumed on every American Table. When asked how Bronco Wine Company can sell wine less expensive than a bottle of water, Fred T. Franzia famously countered, “They're overcharging for the water — don’t you get it?”
Due to Fred’s vision, Bronco Wine Company has achieved vertical integration all while remaining family owned. His entrepreneurial spirit, tireless dedication, and his commitment to both his family and to the Bronco family will forever be remembered. His legacy will endure for generations to come.
Fred is survived by his five children Renata, Roma, Joseph (“Joey”), Carlo, and Giovanna; fourteen grandchildren (soon to be fifteen); his brother, Joseph S.; and his sisters, Joellen and Catherine.
The family of Fred T. Franzia and Bronco Wine Company are grateful for the outpouring of support. The family plans on a private Celebration of Life service. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family has requested that remembrances in honor of Fred T. Franzia be made in the form of contributions to the following:
